To celebrate Earth Day, we wanted to share some of the sustainability initiatives that NHA is working on. Sustainability is an integral part of our strategic plan for the next three years. We know that environmental justice is also tied to equity work, as communities of color historically and presently experience the negative impacts of pollution and environmental destruction more acutely than white communities and are among the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change.
- We are pleased to announce that Northwest Housing Alternatives was recently awarded the Gold level certification under Clackamas County’s Leaders in Sustainability program.
- NHA’s office building is designed to Net Zero standards. Through an energy project funded in part by Portland General Electric, the office’s energy usage can be monitored from anywhere.
- We strive to build NHA’s new affordable housing properties to Earth Advantage standards. Prioritizing green building in our properties has the win-win effect of reducing utility burdens for our residents as well as limiting our impact on the environment.
- NHA has an engaged Sustainability Committee that works on initiatives to promote sustainable practices across the organization. In addition to organizing educational opportunities for staff, the committee also works on promoting initiatives to cut back on single-driver commuting, encouraging the use of re-usable coffee mugs, composting food scraps, and more.
We wish you a happy Earth Day today and every day!
