Matt’s home is Hawthorne East, 71 units of affordable housing for Oregonians
with special needs and older Portlanders living on fixed incomes. He has called

When asked whether he could still afford his home if the rents increased, Matt
replied “Oh, absolutely not. The rent would have been more than my entire

A safe, dignified, and affordable place to call home is something that everyone
needs. Stable housing helps families succeed, allows older adults to age in
place and remain connected to their community, and makes it possible for people
like Matt to maintain their quality of life.
As the largest nonprofit developer of affordable housing in Oregon, Northwest
Housing Alternatives creates opportunity through housing for over 2,600
Oregonians like Matt.
Northwest Housing Alternatives recently acquired Hawthorne East and rescued the
building from market-rate conversion. Now Hawthorne East will remain an
affordable place to call home for Matt and all of the building’s tenants, and it
will continue to be affordable for at least 60 years.
Matt truly appreciates Hawthorne East. “It is kind of like an oasis for me. It
enables me to enjoy this city, this community. I’m close to my sister, and I’m
close to friends.”
NHA is now providing Resident Services at Hawthorne East. For the first
time, Hawthorne East’s residents have services connected to their housing.
NHA’s Resident Services program is designed to help our residents live healthy,
stable, and independent lives. Hawthorne East’s residents benefit
nursing visits, financial education, emergency food boxes, and community
Northwest Housing Alternatives is proud to preserve Hawthorne East for Matt, his
neighbors, and for generations of Portlanders to come.
